This is a writing check-in and fun post all in one. I have done some writing this week - around 1,000 words worth - but a death in the family this week meant that a lot of the time I was meant to spend writing and marking assignments was lost (it wasn't someone I was close to but it has been hard for other family members). Ah well, sometimes these things happen and all you can do is try to work around it. As far as my novel goes, I think some scenes are becoming a bit clearer, but others still need work. I am starting (slightly) to break myself of the habit of picking at one section at the expense of finishing the story, but it's a slow process :) I did manage to do a painting last night, though, since I couldn't concentrate on either writing or uni stuff:

I spend most weekends at home either writing or painting; ie. being a desk hermit. Today, however, I set aside my anti-social tendencies and went gallivanting off into the city, more specifically, to the Melbourne Zoo for a friend's birthday party and to Supanova. Here are some of my favourite photos from the zoo:

After I left the zoo, I headed over to the Melbourne Showgrounds for Supanova. I didn't get to spend as long there as I would have liked, but I did get to chat with two awesome authors, Michael Pryor (writer of The Laws of Magic series and the Extraordinaires series, and wearer of wicked top hats) and Ben Chandler (The Voyages of the Flying Dragon series). If you like reading YA fantasy, especially with a steampunk setting, check out their books. You won't be disappointed.
Tomorrow will be spent catching up on assignment marking, since life (or, more specifically, death) prevented me from getting it done during the week, but at least today was awesome :) Anyway, I'm off to slather more deep heat gel into my knee (old karate injury always plays up if I walk around all day) and head off to bed. Adios.

ReplyDeleteHey Rebecca. Sorry you suffered a loss. Even if not personally close, I find an aura of bereavement in those I love can be draining and slows cognition. My mom lost a boyfriend who I'd only met a handful of times over the years, but I cried for her for weeks on and off. I thought of her all the time - how she must be feeling etc. So I'm really sorry you have to experience that.
ReplyDeleteGlad you got to spend time out and about - and I find animals are the best of company, don't you :) Esp JD! :) Hope your week ahead brings progress in many ways. XX
What a great post.. and what an awesome looking Meerkat.. ok, you doctored him up a bit, but I needed the laugh... :)
ReplyDeleteI picture him with an accent and I just lost it.
Hope your knee feels better. And I am so sorry for your loss.
Great post, Rebecca.
Okay, Imperious Meerkat might be my new favorite thing EVER. I shall imagine him looking down his monocle at me every time I decide I am "too tired" to write.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pictures, and I'm glad you got a chance to venture beyond the desk! Also, thanks for the book recommendations. I shall add both their works to my TBR list stat.
I'm so sorry about the loss in the family. There have been a few deaths in my extended family over the last year or two, and it really is emotionally difficult and draining. Many hugs to you and all of your loved ones!
Forget any drain on bandwidth, Rebecca. Your photos are awesome!!! I'm so glad you were able to get out to be around friends and these delightful animals. The lion was my fave...so majestic. And the elephant family. Elephants are calming to me as well.
ReplyDeleteSorry for your family loss. Kudos on the writing you did get done in the midst of the bereavement. Like other said, it is a difficult moment to bear. Whether close to the person or not, the loss can remind us of the fear of losing those we love. Hoping you are in for a calmer week ahead!
