ROW80 Round 5 - 2nd Update

I've been a bit naughty. Not only did I miss the last check-in (I hadn't done anything worth checking in about anyway), I've barely done any writing on my actual novel over the last week (though I opened the Word document. That counts as work, right? Right??). In my defence, I've worked most days the last week, and the time I did have off was spent with my Nan (and she made me more chocolate fudge, SO THERE), but still, I would have liked to add a few words to the novel. Though I did get a bit more of my thesis edited, so there's that. I also managed to straighten out some bits of the dog's breakfast that is my outline in an attempt to iron out a few inconsistencies. I think the main things I have to work on are a) research for the medieval time period, particularly living conditions, government structure and weaponry/warfare, and b) the backstory/magical structure and rules for the Underworld and the immortal antagonist, since the more I dig through my plot, the more little things I discover that either could be done better, or that just don't make sense.

My Nan bought me a painting book on Monday, and it's given me a lot of ideas for illustrations for my novel characters. I've been doing a few sketches and I'm hoping to do a drawing/painting of one of them sometime this week. And I'm kind of looking forward to next week as well; I'll be starting my new roster with fewer hours now that the holiday rush is over, and though it will mean less money, it will mean more time for procrastinating - er... writing and painting. >.> As I mentioned in my goals post for the start of this round, I really want to get back into painting and drawing. I want to become a lot better at it than what I am, and the only way I can do that is with practice, but I also want to do it for the sake of the art itself, because I've always found drawing and painting to be relaxing (at least until things start going wrong, and then I turn into a homicidal maniac armed with sharpened pencils and paint-smeared brushes).

Also, for the love of whatever deity you believe in, will someone PLEASE drag me away from the online art supply stores before I spend any more money? (actually, wait til I order this really cool thing I just found... Okay, now drag me away) Yes, I have an art supply addiction. Don't judge me! I get enough of that from the mutt :|

Finally, I just had to share this awesome video, which I'm sure all readers and writers will love; What Happens in Bookstores at Night:

Judgemental Dog was a bit camera shy this week, so his deputies, Spot and Dash, have taken over cheer squad duties:

See how other ROW80ers are going here.

  1. good luck with your research, have you checked out the 'horrible histories' series? its on like ABC 3 i think and it has a website. It has some great info on the weird crap people used to do.

  2. Horrible Histories are also on the web! We (my unschooled kids and I, that is), found a bunch of them on YouTube.....

That led to film footage of things like the Hindenburg crash, and British public service messages from the 70's - wow- those were somehow horrific and hilarious, all at once.

That's a cool and fun way to learn more...although you might mot stop singing for days!

I love your dogs. I love my dog. Unfortunately, he isn't in the least Judgmental - he thinks I rule everything. =)

  3. hehe Thanks, I will check out Horrible Histories as soon as I get around to it (I seem to remember seeing a book series of the same name, though I may be mistaken).
And Spot and Dash are technically my Nan's dogs, but they're still just as happy to nag me when Rex isn't around lol

  4. A painting book for ideas? That's a great idea and how sweet is that for your aunt to invest in you like that. Enjoy the research!

  5. Mmmm chocolate fudge!!
I have similar problem with art supplies, but mine also rolls over into stationery supplies, books, CD's, DVD's - actually best just to keep me out of any store online or off! lol Although I was a good girl in Staples yesterday - I only bought a few things to tidy my desk, ohh but the colourful pens, and papers and shiny things and storage things... okay I got out alive - just! hehe
Good luck with the inspiration :D

  6. I would have taken time off for fudge too...

I would say that we all need to take time for a breather, but it doesn't sound like you are resting at all! You have a lot on your plate (aside from the fudge, which I am sure is gone!). Hope you find lots of time to use your new art supplies :)

Very cute video, thank you for sharing. Good luck next week!

  7. Psssst! I see you opening that art supply website. Hows about shutting it down and reopening that Word Doc and letting some writing hit the page without worry or your dear love, Procrastination.....

I, for one, am grateful you checked in today (even with little to report) and asked for nudges. As far as I am concerned that is a just-right ROW80 check in!

  8. Hi there, Rebecca. Just wanted to say that it sounds like you have been "stewing" with ideas at least. Sometimes (just like the learning curve my son experiences) you need to analyzing in depth over and over before you just "do it"! If you're in that stage, then expect an explosion of creativity and energy.... =)

Loved the video. Thanks for sharing it.

  9. Sounds like you've been staying busy. And enjoy that fudge. It can't be ignored. Yay for the new art supplies. I'm envious of anyone with any sort of artistic talent. So to be able to draw, paint, and write is amazing. Keep up the good work!

  10. Yes. Opening it counts. Sadly enough, opening a document is one of my goals. It has to count. I think you should enjoy your art supply addiction. Justify it. These are the things that make life beautiful and interesting - how can you say no to that?

    Oh, wait - that wasn't helpful? :P
