ROW80 Round 1 - 2nd Update

Since I was busy drawing this and this, and playing around with these, I haven't done as much writing as I would have liked over the last few days (and work eating most of my Saturday didn't help, either). In fact, I think since the last check-in, my word count hasn't budged. This sucks quite a bit, since I was hoping to have finished Chapter 1 done by the end of the weekend so I could email it to the other writers in my workshopping group - no chance of that happening now. I'll have to get it done by Wednesday at the latest so I can send it around and give people time to read it before our meeting next Saturday.

I've also realised I won't be able to workshop the whole thing anyway, even if I do get it finished. Our writing group has a limit of five pages per workshopper (for time constraint reasons), and my first chapter is already at five pages, and will most likely be around eight or nine pages by the time it is complete. Ah well...

On a more positive note though: A discussion with one of my friends about my novella last night posed a lot of questions about my characters and their motivations - some of which I had answers to, and some of which I didn't. Thinking about these things has given me a lot of material to build up my outline, especially for part 3 - and given that part 3 is the climactic point of the story, it's important that it is as real as possible so it has more impact. Even though I'm not specifically aiming to write that section yet, it's good to have the story clearer in my mind.

Now, hopefully I can get some writing done tonight...

Judgemental Dog is watching you...

  1. Good luck for next week on the writing side but I think you've done really well. (Tell the dog that - LOL)
Working Saturdays is awful, I got roped into doing it this week and it really put a spanner in the works.

  2. hehe Thanks :) Saturday was meant to be my day off, but when they called me in I couldn't afford to say no to the money, being a student and all haha
And the dog would probably be forgiving of writing slackness as long as the time was spent patting him; that look of horror on his face was his reaction to my new Dalek alarm clock screeching "Exterminate! Exterminate!" at him hahaha

  3. I love judgemental dog. :)

That's great about your novella though, I figured out stuff too and it made me more enthusiastic about getting some actual writing done. I hope you feel better about next week. :)

  4. The dog is awesome. I'm just sayin'. And hey, this is a prime example of why you have to be somewhat flexible in your goals. Life jumps up and says "HA! I'm going to INTERRUPT YOU!" and you have to be prepared for that without letting it throw you wholly off track. Good job!

  7. Sometimes life just gets in the way. But you'll catch up to where you want to be. Keep up the good work!

  8. It's true - despite best laid plans, stuff happens. All we can do is fit it in and adjust the best we can - and I'm sure you will!

  9. I'm sorry you didn't get in as many words as you'd like, Rebecca, but making maps, sketching characters, and playing with cover layouts can be equally productive exercises! Writing's not *just* about the words. ;)

Also, don't you just love talking over bookstuff with friends? I find that non-writerly friends can sometimes be the best to talk to, because they look at things purely as a reader. They don't know why something works, but they know when it does or doesn't, and can sometimes have surprising insights.

Good luck with your writing this week! :)

  10. Don't let it get to you, you've made progress and that's great! And if you ever grow tired of your dog just send him to me :D

  11. Thanks guys :) I'm working again tonight, but then I have the rest of the week off, and my folks return to work next week, so hopefully writing should be easier for me then with fewer interruptions.
It helps to have someone who is genuinely interested in your story. Aside from my writing group and this friend, most of my family and friends are at best indifferent towards my writing, or at worse derisive of it. Ah well... When I'm published, they're not getting a signed copy :P But when you find someone who likes your writing but can still give constructive criticism, it is many kinds of awesome.
Peeking at some of your blogs, I can see that you all seem to be doing pretty well with your own ROW80 challenges. Keep up the good work :D
As for the dog, he's too cuddly for me to give up ;)
